Second Brain vs ChatGPT and Claude

Isn’t this just ChatGPT or Claude?

The short answer

No, and to be fair, this is not a true like-for-like comparison either. ChatGPT and Claude are the AI models you talk to; a Second Brain is the knowledge layer across all your AI systems, holding the curated company knowledge every model draws on.

Some features overlap, but the real question is not which one you pick. It is how this fits into your current AI tool stack: it is a different layer, not a replacement.

So you are not replacing your AI. You are finally giving it context.

Why compare them?

Your team probably uses ChatGPT or Claude every day already. So when someone brings up a Second Brain, the reflex makes sense: don’t we have that already? Or worse: do we have to switch? The question behind that reflex is really a different one: how does this relate to the AI tools you use today? That is why this page exists.

Imagine seeing a different doctor at every appointment. Each time, you start from scratch: your medical history, your situation, what matters to you. AI without a knowledge layer works much the same way. Every chat starts blank, and you have to explain all over again who you are, how you work and what has already been decided.

With a Second Brain, that stops: your AI already knows your organisation. It is like seeing a doctor who has known you for ten years. Work out how much time your team loses each week re-explaining context.

In 65 seconds: why standalone AI chats capture only a fraction of the value.

What ChatGPT and Claude do well

First, credit where it is due: there is plenty here to be excited about.

  • ChatGPT’s Company Knowledge cites sources in its answers, and that works really well.
  • The connector ecosystem is growing at lightning speed: integrations with popular tools often already exist.
  • Projects work well for personal context: your own documents alongside your own conversations.
  • Low barrier to entry: create an account and you are up and running, with no implementation project.

Where features overlap, we say so honestly: ‘partly’ is an answer too.

The difference that matters

Four areas where you notice the difference in practice.

One brain, for every model

"A second brain is basically a drive for all AI models. That is how you should see it." Your company knowledge sits in one place, curated and up to date, and every AI tool reads from it.

From the AI Hub, agents work with it directly. And through an MCP connection, the same knowledge is available in the tools your team already uses, such as Claude, ChatGPT and Claude Code. Your team switches to a new favourite model? The brain simply moves with it.

The AI Hub has a chat too, by the way, but that chat is not what you buy this for. The real value lies in the context layer: retrieving knowledge and updating it, from whichever AI tool you like.

With and without company context

You notice the difference with the first question that needs company knowledge. Without a knowledge layer you get a generic answer, and the copying and pasting of context begins. With a Second Brain, your AI fetches the context itself, source included.

Without a Second Brain

What is our onboarding process for new clients?

That varies from one organisation to the next. Could you share what your onboarding looks like today? Think of the steps, who is responsible and how long it takes.

So you are back to searching, copying and pasting documents together.

With a Second Brain

What is our onboarding process for new clients?

Your onboarding has three steps: a kickoff with the client, set-up and go-live, and a review after 30 days. Operations owns it; I will add the checklist.

Source: Operations Knowledge Base

Curation: what goes in is accurate

ChatGPT neatly cites where an answer comes from, but does not check whether that source is still correct. If there is an outdated proposal or a half-finished note among your documents, it comes back in the answer with exactly the same confidence.

In a Second Brain, knowledge goes through review: team members propose changes, an owner approves them. With permissions you decide who sees what and who can change what. That is how you build a source you can rely on for your answers.

Ownership and the long term

"This is not a tool, it is your database." Knowledge you put into an AI product belongs to that product. A Second Brain belongs to you: its curated company knowledge remains valuable whichever AI model leads next year.

However capable AI becomes, you only get the most out of it once it understands you, your business and how your team works. That makes the knowledge layer a lasting foundation for everything you do with AI.

You do not have to choose

This is not an either-or choice, and certainly not a migration. Your team keeps working in ChatGPT or Claude; the Second Brain is the shared knowledge layer that makes every conversation smarter.

Through an MCP connection, you call on the Second Brain directly from your own AI tools: retrieving context and updating knowledge without switching tools. Your existing subscriptions become more valuable, not redundant: the brain feeds your AI, it does not replace it.

When is a standalone account enough, and when is it not?

Sometimes a standalone account is simply the right choice. Here is the honest trade-off.

A standalone ChatGPT or Claude account is enough if

  • you mostly work on your own and need little shared knowledge
  • your questions rarely rely on company-specific knowledge
  • your team first wants to get used to AI in day-to-day work
  • the shared knowledge fits into a handful of documents that rarely change

A Second Brain starts to make sense once

  • colleagues ask the same question and get different answers
  • knowledge sits in people’s heads, folders and old emails instead of in one place
  • you want to be sure AI answers rely on checked knowledge
  • you work with several AI models or want to be able to switch
  • knowledge has to stay when colleagues leave

And how does it fit into your current AI tool stack?

If you choose a Second Brain, we see two user profiles in practice. Either way, everyone wins: nobody has to give up the tool they trust.

Most desk-based workers

  • use the AI Hub, with the Second Brain built in
  • find it more than sufficient for the work they now do in ChatGPT, Copilot or Claude
  • automatically get company context with every question

Power users

  • keep working in their favourite tool, such as Claude
  • connect it directly to the Second Brain via MCP
  • retrieve context and update knowledge from that tool
